可以说，硬核朋克（Hardcore Punk）乐队在90年代经历了一个枯竭期。1987年，加州最重要的三支硬核乐队Dead Kennedys、Black Flag、Circle Jerks相继解散。一年后，Bad Religion跨入了旋律性更强的领域，推出了极具影响力的专辑《Suffer》，改变了南加州朋克场景的面貌。在东海岸，Bad Brains乐队凭借1993年发行的专辑《Rise》，从传统的硬核坚定地转向另类金属（Alternative Metal）。在纽约市，“青年团运动”（ Youth Crew Hardcore）的领军乐队Youth of Today于1990年宣告解散，而纽约硬核（New York Hardcore）乐坛的另一支重量级乐队Agnostic Front也于1993年退出。然而，硬核并没有在90年代消亡，在这十年中仍有许多乐队高举“传统硬核”的火炬。00年代初，硬核音乐复兴，出现了一些全新的唱片公司，如Bridge Nine Records、Deathwish Inc.。
